Heretic's Mire

Heretic's Mire is a cold, dark stretch of boggy grassland on the far side of the portal that stands beyond the throne at the eastern end of the Desert. Broken trees and lines of old stone wall close the ground in on every side, so that the way through the Mire winds between bog pools, past the barrows of whoever was buried here, to the ruins of a chapel and the stones the heretics raised around it. The drowned walk here, in packs.

Overview

You arrive on the western edge of the Mire, on a patch of mud among dead trees, with the portal back to the Desert behind you. From there the only way on is east, through the bog, and the first Zombie pack is waiting among the pools.

Reaching the Mire

The portal stands beyond the throne at the far eastern end of the Desert, past the last of the dead lying below the altar. It is open from the start: walk up to it and step through.

The Way Through

  • The landing: a patch of mud among dead trees where the portal stands, with a grave mound or two to say what this place is.
  • The bog: wide, dark pools of standing water between tufts of reed and bramble, where the first pack of the drowned stands waiting.
  • The causeway: a muddy track between broken walls and fallen columns, lined with gibbets and chained posts, with a pack along it.
  • The barrows: rows of grave mounds in the open grass, with another pack among them.
  • The chapel: the ruined stone walls, gable and columns of a chapel at the far end, its idol still standing among skull cages and burning posts, where the largest pack of all stands guard over a chest.

The Chest

An ornate chest waits in the ruined chapel. Opening it flops its contents onto the ground beside it, rolled from a pool of weapons and armor.

Connections

  • The Desert: The portal on the western edge leads back to the eastern end of the Desert, beside the throne.

Tips

  • The packs come as one. Fight where the trees and the walls narrow the way, so the drowned reach you a few at a time.
  • A Zombie staggers when hit hard, so a well-timed blow will stop an overhead swing before it lands.
  • Make room in your bag before setting out, so whatever the chest gives you and the drowned drop can be picked up.
