Waystone
A Waystone is a slab of old rock carved with a sun with long rays, sunk flush into the ground so that grass, sand or mud closes over its edge. Every outdoor area has one somewhere in it, and together they let you cross the world in a single step instead of walking back the way you came.
Attuning
A Waystone you have never stood on lies dark, with only a faint glimmer in its grooves when your cursor passes over it. Walk onto it and it wakes: blue light floods the carving, a low hum rises from the stone, and the game tells you which Waystone you have attuned to.
Attuning is permanent for that character. Once a Waystone is lit for you it stays lit, every time you come back, even after you log out. The one in the hideout is attuned from the start, so there is always somewhere to return to.
Travelling
Click a lit Waystone and the world map opens, showing every area you have found, the paths between them and which of their stones you have woken. Pick any lit Waystone on the map and you are carried straight to it, arriving on the stone itself. A dark one cannot be chosen until you have walked there and woken it.
Reading the Glow
A lit Waystone breathes, its light swelling and fading slowly, and it brightens when your cursor rests on it. With Enhanced Special Effects on it is a real light as well, washing the ground and anyone standing near it in cold blue, which makes it easy to spot from across an area, above all in the gloom of Heretic's Mire.
Arriving
Arriving by Waystone is the same as arriving through a door: the area is built fresh around you, so its enemies, chests and sealed portals are all back, just as they would be if you had walked in.
